Earlier Critter & Guitari video synthesizer that runs Python/Pygame modes from a USB drive
The ETC Television Center, or ETC, is Critter & Guitari's earlier video synthesizer and the closest relative of the EYESY. It turns audio and MIDI into HDMI video, using modes written in Python with the Pygame library. The modes, along with screenshots, live on a small USB drive plugged into the unit, and the ETC will only work properly with that drive attached.
The unit's operating system is on an internal microSD card that the manual tells owners not to remove or modify, and no OS image for the ETC is published, so the user-replaceable part is the Modes folder on the USB drive: copy mode folders in from a computer, or edit them over WiFi with the web editor (a USB WiFi adapter is a separate purchase). The EYESY replaced it with a newer OS and the same mode approach.
